I’m in a zone 4, South Idaho/Cache Valley with an acre for trees. You have an awesomely long list of both trees & shrubs. Specifically for those that produce food, if I can only plant a few (and other than the fruit trees and berries I’m familiar with) what would be your top 5 or top 10 of must-haves for the value they bring to you (food/medicinal, not for firewood- we have sources for that)? Thank you!
Hi Sara, Good question, and the answer depends on your goals. Here are some questions to help guide your selection; Are you interested in having some fruits ready for picking at most times of the year? Are you mainly focused on fruits that can be preserved in jams/jellies, or good storage apples that will last long in a root cellar for instance? Are you interested in nut trees that might require more processing? Do you have a way to process them? Do you have any animals that you want to provide for with these plants as well?
You can do some really specific database searches for what you’re looking for at PFAF.org and get more personalized experiences in the comments on each plant entry at Davesgarden.com. Happy hunting!
